When AC2 spawned it's own character sequels, it was expected AC3 would go the same way so it was quite a surprise to see the fourth numbered game not only appear so quickly, but mark as a return to form with an entirely fresh sea battle section to boot! To be honest, I think there is too much time spent sailing from location to location, but this is still a worthy entry in the franchise, and definitely offers a change to the standard free running gameplay.

In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the sea itself becomes our true republic—vast, free, and untamed. The gameplay, rich with naval combat and exploration, grants man a fleeting taste of natural liberty before society’s chains close in. Though bound by creed and conspiracy, one feels the wind’s call, and for a moment, discovers the joy of being sovereign upon the waves.

Really confusing as an introduction to Assassin's creed, quality and polish is all over the place. Has some missions that are great. Being a pirate is awesome. I just wish the AI was not so incredibly stupid. It gets worse the more you play. The story is confusing and gives no reason to care about anything, plus there are stupid "real world" sections where you need to play "frogger" to progress. Play the pirate bits and ignore the rest I guess.

I've never really understood why these Assassin's Creed games have to be some sort of weird-ass video game within a video game set in some sci-fi modern world. That aside, the basic feel and mechanics of it all are pretty fun if occasionally repetitive, and the addition of the pirate vibe really spices up the Assassin's Creed flavor is something I might say if I'd played previous Assassin's Creed games
