Cuphead

2017
Action, Platformer
Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Cuphead is a very simple but very well-crafted game. It's difficulty is high but it very rarely feels cheap, and most deaths end up feeling like they're your fault. The bosses are all very well-made, and the run-and-gun levels, while not being great, are still good (except 'Perilous Piers'). The visuals and music are top notch, showing just how much love and care went into this game. If you love action games, or are just feeling nostalgic for Steamboat Willie, Cuphead is worth your time.

A beautiful retro inspired, side scroller. The presentation in this is divine, as it perfectly captures the golden age of cartoons. If you like impossible boss fights, this game is for you. A very frustrating yet rewarding experience. I still haven't beaten the game on default difficulty.

They delayed this gorgeous game to add in the worst part: run and gun levels. I spent the entire game waiting for something racist to attack me. I was surprised.

This isn't for me. Boss battles are rarely the selling point for a game for me, and hard difficulty isn't either. But I give this a 70 despite that because I have to admit that the boss battles are a good time, and this excels in the audio and visual departments. Seriously gorgeous.

Obviously has a very nice aesthetic, and I really appreciated the post-game hard mode with upgraded boss patterns. The run n guns are kinda mediocre though, and I really don't like the King Dice fight.

I dig its artstyle, but the gameplay is pretty meh? The level design doesn't really mesh with the game's mechanics as something like parrying is more of a scoring method rather than a consistent mechanic and bosses are very bland "stand and shoot then occasionally jump/dodge" sort of design. This game really isn't that hard when you figure out that movement is a trap and you often don't have to commit much to it to win most levels. It has some decent boss fights, but this is very overrated.

This is the worst 2D platformer I have ever beaten. The difficulty is a 10/10 on regular. Which it shouldn't be this hard on the default mode. Then you got a simple mode which that is supposed to be easy , but that's also very hard on some bosses as it isn't consistent with just the 2 stages every boss is supposed to have. The Pirate boss has the same stages as the regular boss, so no point of playing it on Simple. It's bad. Have check points, make easy mode easy. Let me beat the game on easy.
