Detroit: Become Human is an adventure game developed by Quantic Dream. The plot revolves around three androids: Kara, who escapes the home she was serving in to explore her newfound sentience and protect a young girl; Connor, whose job it is to hunt down deviant androids; and Markus, who devotes himself to releasing the androids from servitude. I like Quantic Dreams games more than I should. Fumbles the bag at the end but the lead up is fun.

Two of the three stories were extremely compelling (couldn't care much for the over importance of Markus' tale) but ... there just isn't much game here for a video game.

A ham-fisted story lacking in any subtlety hurts the overall appeal of the game, but fails to stop this from being an enjoyable experience. The consequence of your choices feel realistic and plentiful, with enough distinction in the story paths to make each diversion meaningful. Despite the lack of finesse, the game manages to be emotionally moving. Probably the best of the genre, though that isn't saying much.

Look, David Cage is a goddamn idiot and the writing in this game is unbelievably ham-fisted and stupid but this one is at least quite fun to play and the sheer breadth of story paths is impressive. I still need to do a run where all my characters are total assholes.

It's the same with all these quantic dream types, they'd be god damn awful movies if ever put to a big screen, but the notion of choice and interactivity somehow always make for an enjoyable waste of time.

mostly a masterpiece for these kinda games. some annoying controls, mainly the controller moving ones. nothing was too annoying like puzzle or figuring out shit like most of these kinda games. i'd watch a movie with these graphics and facial expressions. every storyline was satisfying. i'd need to see all the possibilities and shit to know just how great this is, and unfortunately i feel like keeping permanence to my story. little things like the menu bot and controller noises were cool

Ok game. Not as good as Heavy Rain. Story was ok with this one. I just didn't care about the characters a whole lot.

I have to give it to David Cage, he made me cry by the end. Not tears of sadness or joy, no no, I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe. This is a good thing though because Cage's understanding of racism was woefully stupid.

Another mess of a David Cage game. Robots aren't human, so a narrative that presents them as analogous to oppressed minorities by, e.g. putting them at the back of a bus (!), is uproariously, insultingly stupid. That said, Connor, one of the three playable characters, is lovely. But then there's Jessie Williams, playing Robot Messiah, and being as unlikeable as he is in real life, i.e. very. Inasmuch as this works, it's almost entirely thanks to Connor's actor, Bryan Dechart. Good job, Bryan.

It's fairly cliché throughout, but Quantic Dream almost finally manages to make a game fully sensible, and there are some relatively impactful scenes. It even has probably more meaningful player agency than any other game of this type released up until now. Still, near the end of my playthrough I encountered an absurd plot element that I can't fathom how to actually make coherent, and my ending was altered from what it probably should have been because I couldn't convince my character to walk.
