Earthworm Jim

1994
Platformer
Jim is a normal earthworm, until a special "super suit" falls from the sky and allows him to operate much like a human, with his "worm-part" acting as a head and the suit acting as arms, body, and legs. Jim's task is two-fold: he must evade the game's many antagonists, who are after him because they want the suit back, and also rescue and protect Princess What's-Her-Name from them. (wikipedia.org)

I've always thought of it as more of an achievement of aesthetics and style and mood and character design than a really especially well-playing game, but I'll give some credit where it's due. Of many attempts at creating new iconic video game heroes in the early and mid 90s Jim stands out as less obnoxious than most.

aggravating. the animation is fluid and exciting, but the aesthetic makes the game entirely unclear. some tires can be bounced on, others are just background animations, and that lack of clarity is compounded by enemies which also fall into this ambiguous artistic design. seems like something I'd grow to enjoy more if I had nothing else to play, but I'm not so generous with movies, and that's not going to change for a game.

A step up for pixel platformers in terms of animation, but not a good game.

I am giving it this score because the end level like so many of these retro games are impossible to beat. With the limited lives and continues again only hurts this. Other than that pretty good game when it came out.

I like the character, the world, the attempts at humour, and the music. The gameplay is frustrating and the difficulty is inconsistent/

It didn't take itself seriously, and that was fun. But some of the level gimmicks were tedious, and the sound effects just got really grating to me.

Not among the best platformers on the Genesis, but the game had some of the smoothest looking visuals and animations in the era. On top of that, the game controls really well and the level design is pretty good. Bosses had pretty good variety even if their patterns were really simple. On the other end, the sound design is really odd in terms of quality, but I suppose that's more of a result of the Genesis' hardware than anything.
