The original game was full of huge glitches and flaws, like spells that do absolutely nothing, or that do the opposite of what they're supposed to... But it still has a soft spot for me as one of my first RPGs, and the class system makes it something I can still enjoy today.

Very much just the bones of the Final Fantasy series, though it established an admirable amount of iconic iconography and lore and gameplay concepts out of the bat. Normally I love retro graphics/music but in this case I would tend towards the GBA remake; some gameplay bits (like missing if you've targeted a now-dead monster) are so archaic it becomes frustrating on NES.

A pretty barebones RPG. Like many old JRPGs, the strategy is always to use your strongest attack, heal when you're hurt, then keep attacking again. Even by FF standards, this game is pretty one-dimensional. There is a decentish class system, but I found that the differences between classes mostly just came down to what attacks you use than your overall strategy. Outside of that, the story is about as lame as you'd expect from NES titles with dungeons that are pretty forgettable.

To be honest it's still fun picking your own team and seeing if you can make a go at it.

The original Final Fantasy loses points for being overly in depth with very little direction. That being said. The game play is as great as it ever was. Although it does lose much of it's kick with the constant remakes and re-releases.

Final Fantasy 1 is a dated but fairly solid JRPG. It doesn't have much meat in the way of story, but the gameplay is fairly solid and gives you a good idea of why it's such a classic. While I have only played the PSP remake, the original plays very similarly, with the only notable difference being the correction of the many glitches the original had and the removal of the spell slot system (every spell level has a set number of uses) in exchange for the typical MP system. Overall a classic.

As far as story it's pretty light, but for gameplay, for a RPG in the NES day, it set the mold for who knows how many would follow it for the genre. Pick your class for the four Light Warriors to restore the orbs and defeat the threat to the world. Has sea travel, airships, lots of neat monsters, good boss fights, insta-death spells that will make you curse.... It's got a lot for NES in 1987.

It holds up well enough, and allows for a bit more customization than the typical NES JRPG.

An admirable take on fantasy adventure that clearly just wanted to have fun and do something innovative in the meantime. Its innovation has become our convention.

surprisingly playable. I had the GBA version with the first two games on it
