Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. Boss fights, exploration, platforming, and lore are all elevated by pitch perfect atmosphere created through art, music, and sound design to make a truly great experience. My favorite moments in a game filled with stellar boss fights were spending 5 minutes just listening to a butterfly ghost sing a song and sitting next to an NPC staring out at an endless underground lake.

Talk about getting a bang for your buck. My first play through of the game was over 40 hours long and it only costs $15 with free DLC. The world is very diverse and expansive and you can pretty much explore the map at your own pace. This is the best indie game that i've played and I can't wait for the sequel.

This game set the bar so high for many video game genre such as platform rpg, metrodvania, indie games. Brilliant.

Dropped. Game has gud atmosphere, npcs, boss fights, & music. But the game is too dark. Special effects spills blocks vision during combat. Body recoil. Safe point is sparse. Lots of enemies, Precision platform, lots of spikes and hot water = painful environment. Backtracking to where you die is pain in the ass. And if you fail again you loose all your money (2x pain). Painful dev decisions: Map needs to hold button to access instead press of a button. Marking map can only be used in safe spots.

The main attraction here is the boss fights, 46 in total, among them some of the most intricate, demanding, carefully crafted 2d combat you will ever find in a video game. Beyond that there's the music and art style, the size and depth of the world, the engrossing exploration. I don't quite love the platforming though, which isn't bad, but not quite up to the rest of the package. And honestly it starts to drag at around hour 40.

Come for the beautifully animated artwork and fun combat, and stay for the surprisingly extensive customization options and lore. I put nearly 50 hours into this game in one playthrough, working toward 100% completion. A really great aspect of this game is that you can sort of choose how challenging you want the game to get. Getting to 100% was a big challenge for me, but there was still a lot more I could have taken on if I'd wanted an even more difficult experience. The game makes it worth it.

Perhaps it's just not the type of Metroidvania that I want. I see all the praise, and I can understand why people love it. The atmosphere is incredible, the music is good, the areas are designed well. Admittedly I didn't beat the game but little things bugged me such as the map, which I guess sounds strange. Also didn't love the combat, don't love how little conveniences that make the game smoother are charms and whatnot.

One of the all-time greatest Metroidvanias ever. I still like the more RPG-y ones, particularly the Igavanias, but this is a fascinating and powerful experience that I'd recommend to anyone who likes video games in general. Path of Pain only took me four tries. Eat it, nerds.
