As someone who was openly booing at the idea of a Metroid FPS beforehand (and ironically got more or less what I was dreading with the next two Metroid Prime games), let me say now that this game SMACKED ME UPSIDE THE HEAD with how freakin' amazing it was, exploring this lonely, haunting, beautiful, puzzling, interconnected world. One of the half-dozen or so games in contention for the title of my all-time favorite. Shit, just writing this mini-review has me wanting to replay it now.

The best of the Metroid series. I loved exploring a wide open map and discovering the areas I could now enter with the power-ups I had discovered.

revolutionized first-person shooters the way Super Metroid revolutionized 2-D adventure gaming. the cinematic presentation is impressive, but also lowers its replay value. while I can't put it on the same pedestal reserved for its SNES predecessor, it deserved to be held in similarly high esteem.

Its got great lore and does a good job at maintiaining suspense, but there is. so. much. backtracking. across the world that it can be really difficult to sustain interest.

Everything great about the Super Metroid formula, translated with impressive fidelity and ingenuity to 3D conventions. The atmosphere, the exploration, and the abilities are perfect; even the platforming is OK for an FPS. I don't know that I'm as wild about the combat as the rest of it, especially as the game throws a lot of it at you towards the end—having to fiddle with multiple gimmicky visors against enemies that hop around taking away your targeting ability just feels excessive.

Highly entertaining and extremely well made metroidvania. I hadn't imagined that a 3D version of Metroid could work so well. Main downsides are slightly cumbersome controls (mostly related to lock-on and turning speed during boss fights) and some needlessly annoying enemy types. And the X-Ray visor mode just looks bad.

I should revisit this game, I found myself physically nauseated by the music and sound design in this game in a way I've never experienced before or since.

One of those 'where the fuck do I go' kind of games, you end up just walking all over the game looking for how to progress.

PrimeHack. Mouse & keyboard is a game changer. Gameplay is very fun now. Dislike the colored doors forces you to constantly switch beams to open. Using visors sucks. Most bosses are generic, except for ridley. Later boss fights are too long... Phazon Mines's music, enemies, boss is obnoxious. Final boss is disappointingly bad. Hate the jetpack alien. The power scale isn't as satisfying compared to 2d games.
