Mortal Kombat follows the story of the Mortal Kombat tournament, a sacred martial arts contest created by the Shaolin Monks, that takes place on a secluded island. Over 500 years ago, the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung overthrew the monks with the help of the monster warrior Goro, and now hosts the contest to steal the souls of the contest's losers to keep himself immortal and powerful. This year's Mortal Kombat tournament is about to take place, and 7 contestants are ready to fight. (igdb.com)

The very first game to have blood in this game as real characters fought in this. This outsold the Snes version 3-1. With the blood code all the arcade finishers were put in this version. Of course this made a lot of parents upset as they bitched to Genesis, therefore having the ESRB rating for this video game and every single game that came out in the future. Which is a good thing I find because they let you know now if a game is too violent or Sexual etc.

I hold such a grudge against this game from back in the early 90s when all my peers were like "lol Street Fighter II is gay now Mortal Kombat has blood so its the new hotness." Fuck you grade school peers, Street Fighter II is still better you tasteless goons!

Take your favorite beverage, whatever it is, then dilute it with the same amount of water. That's this Mortal Kombat. It really tones down the elements that made it great. Smoothness of combos, graphics, blood/gore, all of it. You couldn't help but feel underwhelmed.

The so-so controls and balance weren't what made this a hit, that's for sure. Maybe it was the digitized photos in lieu of graphics, a concept Midway seems to have borrowed from such Atari "classics" as Pit Fighter and Guardians of the 'Hood? Actually, no, I distinctly recall this being the game the other kids wanted to play because there was blood and they'd read about the fatalities (but could not successfully execute any). Still, it was fun enough beating them at it while waiting for a pizza.

I feel like this was Gobots to SF2's Transformers. Yeah I know, Gobots never ripped anyone's spine out, but whatever. I always played Johnny Cage, because of the Van Damme splits/nuts punch.

This game was ok. A rip off Super Streetfighter. But, it was a different take and it started the fighting genre.

This game had some crazy combos but mechanically it was awful and simplistic in a number of ways. For one, movement was terrible - you were limited to jump ins and a slow walk speed, the latter being near worthless and the former being easily punishable. Physics were laughably bad and anti-airs sent opponents high into the air allowing for some dumb infinites and loops. Movesets were also limited and homogeneous, with the top tiers being whoever could reliably infinite best.

When this first came out, it was a really brutal game, and something that you'd play and snicker about. But, like most fighting games, this one got old real quick for me. I'm still undefeated with Raiden since about 2006. The impact this had on the gaming world is bigger than the game itself.

Fighting games by nature have built in obsolescence.

Exciting with the fatalities etc. Looking back it's a mediocre fighting system with weird controls.

I, like you, probably enjoyed ripping heads off w hen this came out but the mechanics just aren't there anymore.

I'm the nonstop barrage of jump kick uppercut you can't escape from but if you do you're cheating and I'm not playing anymore because I also don't know how to do any of the fatalities save for Scorpion because even an invalid can mash that one in.

Mediocre fighter with stiff controls that quickly became obsolete with releases of Virtua Fighter and Tekken. Graphics and animation was pretty impressive for its time though. Its most redeeming quality for me was the fact that it made me realize at young age that I'm a sick fuck who enjoys the most brutal gore.
