He's cute. He's purple. A nasty burp could send those in his vicinity to the burn unit. Allow us to introduce you to Spyro the Dragon. In his debut adventure, Spyro must free his fellow fire-breathers from their crystalline prisons that are located across six worlds. He'll have to run, jump, glide, walk, roll, and fly his way through each of the 35 levels. And when things get physical, he can use a number of attacks on enemies, including fireballs, charge attacks, and superflames.

I've only played it recently on the remaster, and as a grown a** man with a family, so not the target audience. But this game is incredibly boring. That said, my 4yo loves it, so there's that.

Offers no challenge; but is cozy and nice to play, and doesn't outstay its welcome.

An impressive platformer in many ways; copied to death by many others over the next decade or so. Insomniac really made the most of the PS1 hardware with those long draw distances (though you can notice the clever little transition areas for loading, too). Gameplay wise, Spyro was all about the simple pleasure of zipping about much faster than in most 3D platformers and busting countless containers full of pinging gems. Not as varied as the studio's later work, but a great foundation.

Well honestly I have never finished this game as I can't play it for more than 15 minutes before I get nauseous from the camera. I did however enjoy it enough to keep trying to play it every so often.

Without the nostalgia glasses on Spyro was a slightly above average 3D platformer. Pales to anything big N was doing at the time (and I was a huge Sony fanboy throughout the 90s).

Spyro the Dragon is a relative high point for the playstation. Offering some tricky and fun platforming, A few hilarious Dragons to meet, and a world beautiful to behold. Issues will come up with bosses being to easy and a lack of additional gameplay beyond what is experienced in the first level.

A decent if slightly overrated PS1 collectathon. Lots of nostalgia.

Another one of the games that felt like dozens of others, just differently painted characters.

Spyro is an odd collectathon in the sense you collect so much shit and get no reward out of it. Despite that, the levels are vivid and colorful, boasting a great atmosphere and beautiful aesthetic. A shame that the game is really easy and the level design fairly rudimentary. Still, It's a pleasant enough stroll that it never feels completely dull and mechanically the game feels satisfying to play. Not quite as good as its sequels, but it isn't something I'd call awful.

the collectathon platformers of the late 90s were a scourge on gaming. there were very rare exceptions. this is not one of them.

My favorite platformer of all times. Level design is amazing and figuring out how to get some faraway crystals is often quite demanding, but always fun and not too frustrating. Just perfect in its simplicity.
