It's all about that moment, when the level of challenge lines up perfectly with your level of skill and preparation, and every decision becomes a matter of life and death... The game doesn't always find those moments, with its plethora of balancing issues, but when it does, it displays the full power of the emergent narrative.

Why does a soldier with a shotgun only have a 12% chance of hitting a massive space mutant hiding behind a tiny Charlie Brown Christmas tree 3 feet away

Doesn't quite live up to the promise of the idea. The tactical aspect is cool except the chance of hitting can be a bit bad. I never finished because I got the PS3 version and by God the slowdown just became unbearable at times.

A good game that isn't quite what I wish it was. I enjoy the gameplay in battles quite a bit, but I'm not a big fan of the overarching strategy layer. Squad management is fine but I don't really like the seemingly massive impact of research decisions (which are really hard to evaluate in usefulness until you have already tried them) and the way the game makes you do a lot of "injure and capture" with its enemies. I know that adds some strategy to encounters but I don't enjoy it.

Straight up good game made nearly irrelevant by the sequel since every aspect was improved.

I was RIGHT IN THEIR FACE and I missed. Besides that this game is stressful and tactical in good ways, but since this series came back it has had a problem with hit detection. I was less bothered by it here than with its sequel.

loved creating my friends and reloading so they wouldnt die LOL cuz i'm a pussy. then creating my fav fictional characters and letting them die and playing the game properly once i understood its complexities better. love the combat style. and the base and upgrading stuff for the most part but often thats the detracting parts. oh and i love that you can play while eating

(Revised down after getting to the later BS levels) Takes too long to get to the action, there's tons of slowly moving forward looking for enemies. Then it's too easy to die suddenly after only a few shots. A better tack would've been to have a squad of characters with a story, that you discover as you go through the game, instead of constantly losing soldiers. The base management too is a neat idea, but ultimately quite tedious and poorly laid out. Shadowrun Dragonfall is this game done well.

Take tactics style battles and mix in guns and aliens, and you have XCOM. Of course, this ignores the base building phase of the game. Brutally fun, and only better with the Endless War mod. I love naming the characters after people I know and watching them all die horrifically, alone in an alley behind a garbage bin.

A solid remake that for better or worse did away with the very large maps of the original.

Perfectly fine, but I keep thinking there should be more to it. Being able to quicksave in combat is really dumb.
