I'm giving this an 80 because at the time, when a cover-based shooter wasn't everywhere, this was fun to play with someone. It wasn't perfect, but it was enjoyable. It would be a disservice for me to look back at it now, not having played it since, and say I don't like it.

The game that popularized cover-based systems in shooters. You're welcome, everybody! Here it is! This is why shooters went through a decade of slow-ass gameplay. The original Gears feels a little stiff, but it's still a solid shooter with a fun world and an atmosphere that often bordered on ridiculous Rambo fanfiction. But it also smartly diverged from the shooting whenever it could. Tense segments with one-kill bats that'll get you in darkness? Fucking aces.

The first game was different enough to be a lot of fun to play through. I loved the wide variety of weapons, the gritty gameplay, and the cover system. Multiplayer was a lot of fun. Still, after one playthrough, which lasted all of one afternoon, I have no desire to pick up this game again.

Playing for the first time in 2022 with no nostalgia attached... this was kind of a slog to get through. Hopefully the sequels improve. There's some light worldbuilding but not really any story to speak of; go here and shoot the things, now go here and shoot the things, etc. The level of machismo is so ridiculously over the top, everyone's a giant meathead with testosterone levels off the charts. Maybe this is part of the charm(?), but I find it more eyerolling than anything

The game is kind of a slog to get through, as you toil from set piece to set piece, trying to keep cover and going through a million bullets. Melee is satisfying but gets repetitive as well. I like the atmosphere though, but not so much the roided up character design. Internet co-op is annoying if you have someone who insists you get all the dog tags; I just want to get through the level! It's a decent game, but nothing spectacular.

A solid game that set the groundwork for much better sequels. It showcased the potential of cover-based shooters despite how broken the multiplayer was.

The real birth of the cover-based shooter. Gears of War delivered a long, satisfying campaign with excellent co-op, and gritty, pleasing visuals. In general, the story is somewhat basic, and characters are one-dimensional, but hey, it's Gears of War. Never could get into the multiplayer.

'Roided out and heavily armored bags of meat, scream their way through cohorts of equally 'roided out aliens. and everyone in the game is equipped with a chainsaw machine gun... Needless to say I loved it...
