Metal Gear Solid is a stealth game created by Hideo Kojima which follows the MSX2 video games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Despite a transition to 3D, Metal Gear Solid's gameplay remains similar to his predecessors. The game utilizes a traditional top-down view and the player must navigate the protagonist Solid Snake through the game's areas without being detected. Detection will set off an alarm which draws armed enemies to his location.

There I was it was sixth grade, we were all asked by the teacher privately what our new computer passwords will be for the new programs. "Deepthroat". I learned a lot that day.

20 years after the fact, it lacks the subversiveness of latter installments in the series, but it retains what made it so appealing upon release: it's a really fun, pulpy experience, filled with plot twists and turns that overcome the extremely dated gameplay. the PS1, as a console, has not aged particularly well. Metal Gear Solid is as perfectly preserved as a game built on CDs and polygonal textures can get. and at this point, it's playable history.

Insane. When Psycho Mantis turned off my TV and told me what games I had played on the memory card in my Grandmother's basement, my brother and I looked at each other, horrified, and had thought we had slipped inside a Black Mirror. I hid in lockers and inside boxes, terrified. I blindly attacked Revolver Ocelot with all the bravery I had. Here is the game that introduced video game Semiotics, expanded the form into our physical world, and we are all the better for it.

I'm a Metal Gear fanboy so any flaws this has (such as the gameplay being a little outdated, but still fun) doesn't matter because at the time this was the greatest game ever, and is still one of the greatest games ever, only beaten by some other MGS games. The story is probably the best of each individual game, it brought us Shadow Moses which became so integral to Snakes' character, the music was awesome, the bosses are incredibly memorable, and the stealth is fun.

I don't like this game. I used to when it first came out but now the controls are terrible and the fact it has stealth in this turns me off even more. Most notable thing in this game is a ! mark appeared over the enemies heads when they saw you. First time I had ever seen that in a video game.

I'm not a Stealth person, and the engine shows its age, but a really compelling script and solid voice acting kept me drawn in.

A game unlike any other in terms of sheer spectacle and commitment. It often sacrifices gameplay for its over-the-top storytelling but this only makes the ride all the more fun. Only Hideo Kojima could make something this bizarre and have it work, in spite of it's own bad gameplay.

Hurricane Katrina was a false flag. It was an elaborate ruse orchestrated by the Sears Administration to divert the public's attention away from Shadow Moses.

A landmark in video game history. The controls take some getting used to but you will be greatly rewarded. The story still holds up, arguably even better than later instalments.

Whatever else the Metal Gear series does this will always be THE iconic entry, a great mix of stealth and moody settings and action and a story that balances on the perfect edge between goofball anime and military thriller. Solid Snake is one of the ultimate video game protagonists ever.

Has fantastic gameplay, an amazing atmosphere, and some of the most memorable characters in video game history. The writing could be overly grandiose and hammy at times, but I've always considered this to be the best written game in the series. I adore MGS for what it achieved, but I wish that the game capitalized on its mechanics more. We get a lot of cool boss battles and set pieces, but the game pushes narrative before gameplay which I think it suffers for sometimes.

The Konami logo and the game over screen gets a 100.

The usual benefit of stealth missions in games is simply to break up the monotony of all-out action, but they're usually the least memorable or fun parts of the game. Metal Gear flips that on its head and somehow made stealth exciting. One of the few single player games I've ever truly loved.

Amazingly fun and original. The stealth mechanics and voice acting are stellar.

Perfection. From the second that Konami logo appeared with the music it completely had me. Nothing, not even later MGS instalments, have replicated it for sheer style and atmosphere. Unique even within its own franchise I love it to death.

Gameplay doesn't hold up at all - imagine trying to go back to this style of camera now, my god - but a goddamn well-told story with just enough camp without going overboard and some genuinely excellent twists.
