the World of Light mode is a letdown. for all of Brawl's faults, the Subspace Emissary at least indulged the gimmicky desire to see Sonic team up with Samus to fight Kevin Spacey or whoever. Ultimate grounds its game in some Mario Party-ass grind-a-thon that rewards spirits, which are basically trophies sans any sense of history and pride. they could at least tell me who these weirdos from some Australia-only Virtual Boy RPG are. gameplay is very good though. the Belmonts kick ass

Getting good at this game makes it worse. On one end it has a lot of content and the presentation is stellar, but it still maintains a lot of mechanical elements that were bad from previous entries that this title has exasperated to some extent. For example, there are way too many moves that are overly safe making whiff punishes overly difficult and every hit just resets back to neutral. Movement is awkward, various features are half-assed, etc. I could go on. Better than Sm4sh but not by much.

Maybe I give too many 100s, but this is the best version of my favourite fighting game series. The World of Light is wonderful, although it should be played in smaller bursts. The fighting is refined, there is a shit-ton of content. You don't even have to play online to get your money's worth, which I guess is a good thing considering as of writing this the online is crap.

I'm lucky enough to get to play this nearly every day with a group of friends in the same room. We're not bored yet.

More so than any other Smash Bros to date it feels like a hypercharged port of its predecessor, a “Smash Bros for Wii U-Plus” if you will. The sheer number of character and level choices is great and it all feels good to play. I especially like the addition of Simon Belmont. The Spirits adventure mode feels a little undercooked but it’s still an obvious must play for any Nintendo fan.

I bought this game on a whim after trying and not enjoying Smash 4. I like this way more than I expected but I suck. I've mainly been dicking around with spirit stuff but when I play online I am again reminded how bad I truly am.

I don't know if I need to recalculate my score for Smash Wii U after this, because for all intents and purposes, Ultimate IS the better game. It's like the Mario Kart 8 of the franchise: refined to the point where improvement is impossible. The roster is madness, the single-player modes are grindy but better, and it doesn't feel like there's anywhere left to go. But I'm sort of okay with that. I'm ready for this franchise to retire. And maybe my score reflects that more than anything.

This is the best balanced and most complete Smash Bros. game that Nintendo has made to date but I do feel like it is still lacking. It may be that it is too meticulous about insanely niche references than refining the gameplay which I still believe is slightly subpar for a fighting game.

Overall, I think they made something even better than Brawl, and close to Melee's quality level. The actual fighting feels as good as ever, but this game's adventure mode is one of the worst. World of Light is a slog, and the implementation of spirits means you effectively decide the difficulty of each fight, except the hardest ones which basically boil down to luck and cheesing the AI. But Classic mode and regular ol' Versus modes are all you need.

I think this is the ideal Smash game. You have all the characters, almost all of the stages, has a good competitive scene, and most importantly its fun. I will also keep spending money on DLC for as long as Sakurai keeps putting out characters. I don't even care how much it costs. Fighter Pass 2 doesn't even finish for another 2 years and I already bought it because I'm going to be playing this 2 years from now.

Finally the realization of what Smash could be all along. Except the net-code sucks.

I'm never gonna be that much of a Smash guy - I am very bad at it - but this one is definitely the best.

This is a really good game and even better when you're playing with friends! I gave it a 99 score.
