When Mario, Peach, and an entourage of Peach's loyal Toad friends set out for a tropical vacation on lovely Isle Delfino, they're in store for much more than a relaxing holiday. A mustachioed maniac has mucked up the entire island, and Mario is accused of committing the crime. Armed with a hi-tech water cannon called FLUDD (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device), Mario sets out to clean the island, clear his name, and solve the mystery of the villainous vandal.

Sometimes gets unfairly maligned but it's a great addition to the series even if the bits without FLUDD are by far the best.

The best Mario game in terms of raw mechanics, but the way objectives are handled is obnoxious as is the mission structure. The level design isn't inherently bad (in fact, you could argue it's better than Mario 64) but stuff like the pachinko machine or the leaf ride is the devs way of giving you the middle finger. The fact you have to do a lot of waiting to get from place to place within a level in some cases make it worse. Still, the pure platforming is great despite its hiccups elsewhere.

Remember playing this game and immediately not playing it anymore

I think Nintendo themselves knew that this game would be a letdown. FLUDD is hedging your bets on the platforming in the worst way possible because it gives them a get-out-of-jail free card to not refine anything. It's pretty telling that my favorite parts were the levels without FLUDD.

The difficulty factor is not quite as high as other Mario games. However Sunshine makes perfect use of the GameCubes graphics capabilities, set a new standard for animating water in games, and offers a myriad of fun filled and visually stunning levels to traverse.

One of the weaker 3D Mario titles, but nonetheless, an excellent title. The controversial addition of FLUDD ended up being quite fun, allowing Mario to hover, fly, and run with great bursts of speed. Sometimes the visuals and music are a bit too bright/cheerful for my tastes, and some platforming sections are awkward, but still a perfectly good game.

I want to know the dude whose idea it was to take Mario and add a talking water jet pack and had the resolve and follow through to actual construct a fun game

Less balanced than usual, but still appealing. The pleasantly sunny atmosphere and the easy versatility of hovering and splashing around with the water cannon make this a strong entry with a distinctive personality over the rest of the series. The continuation of Mario 64's style of exploration is very welcome, though perhaps the greatest misstep was moving away from that model a little by giving you so little flexibility regarding just which challenges you want to pursue, and in what order.

Still, to this day when I play modern Mario games, I yearn for the days when I could rely on FLUDD to help me through certain puzzles. And I think that says something about Sunshine. The excellent controls with the new water mechanic led to some of the most memorable platforming experiences I've had. Yes, the level design does trend toward frustration, but I never gave up. I never blamed the game. I could do it -- with FLUDD's help.

I think I missed the bus that is enjoyment for this game. It felt like gruntwork and repositioning and getting things just right. It didn't feel like fun to me.

This game was nauseating to me. Like, how kid friendly and sickly sweet could a game get. The title alone made me roll my eyes.

Though a bit repetitive in gameplay concepts at points and with a letdown of a final level/boss, I will very much defend a lot of what this game does, including the odd tropical motif. Seaside cities, beach resorts, a ferris wheel/roller coaster amusement park, a village of giant mushrooms hanging off cliffsides, undersea ruins ruled by an eel, giant waterfalls, harbors and docks - this game just has a cool FEEL to it, man. A game to play in the summer. Great play control too.
