Sleepover in the summer of '00 I witnessed a friend throw an absolute shit fit after losing a just for fun tournament to a god damn Kirby. He punched a hole through the entertainment center while screaming. I've never seen someone get grounded at 2:30 in the morning before.

while this game didn't invent the genre it carved out a space for itself so large that many people don't know a single other game like it. could pick this up any time and have a great time with friends

My friend has this. It's one of the more popular games now. It's just button mashing. No skill.

Actually found it a bit more fun than the sequels, but never liked it.

Super Smash Bros is everything its title suggests. The classic Nintendo beat-em-up has not lost any of its appeal over the years and would only be outdone one single time with its direct sequel.

A fairly unrefined by still quite solid fighting experience. It badly needs more characters and some other gameplay layer that it just lacks.

The first renditon really captured the neatness of the concept, but it wasn't well balanced, the roster was lighter, and it felt more like a gimmick back then than the invite-all tournament in later titles.

I still think back on this game and smile. It didn't just spawn a worldwide sporting event and a franchise that literally makes consoles disappear from shelves. It reinvented the fighting genre. It pulled Nintendo's best together into a smart and tight fighter that attracted even the most jaded players, even the players that despised fighters. I still don't know how HAL did it. But this is gaming history.

Innovative for its time and noteworthy for starting a whole new genre, but I don't hold it in high regard. For one, hit stun lasts FOREVER which allows for some incredibly braindead, overly rewarding combos. Shield stun is massive which makes it easy for a lot of characters to break it, discouraging defensive play. And of course, like all Smash games, hitboxes make no sense. Still, I have a lot of nostalgia for this game and as a first time attempt there's still fun to be had with it.

Still in my heart of hearts the second best of the Smash Bros games, perhaps if only because of how much I loved foot-spiking people into the depths with Kirby.

Pretty creative idea and beginning of a solid franchise.

An interesting take on the fighting genre. Having such a varied group of characters beating the shit out of each other... So cool. The games got better with subsequent entries, and the solo gameplay wasn't very fun, but if you could get three friends together, this made for a great afternoon.

Even though they've improved upon this drastically today by adding more depth, more characters and making the arenas more interesting, this is still fun today so it does hold up.

Gets props for originating a great formula but definitely hasn't held up well.

obsoleted by Melee, but the first in the series holds a special place in my heart for reasons both too complicated and generic to delve into here. beyond that, the sound that this game has upon making a hit still feels better than in any other game in the series. THWOMMMMMMMMMMMMM
