Too many bananas

Too much. Too many characters, each with too many moves. Too many big, oversized maps with too many different kinds of collectibles. Too much backtracking, wandering those empty-feeling maps over and over with each and every one of those characters to scrounge after all those little collectibles. More really is less sometimes.

The absolute nadir of collectathon games. Oh you thought you could collect that banana? Think again asshole, that blue banana can only be picked up by Sperg Kong.

Even as a nine year old I knew this game was convoluted as shit. Lanky Kong is my spirit animal though

I have a soft spot in my heart for this one - but to coin a Cranky Kong phrase, it was Too Big for Its Britches, which is both a positive and a negative. It was remarkable how much gameplay you could actually fit into this; but this made it tedious and slow, and interest would often grind to a halt. I spent too much time playing the arcade Donkey Kong within this Donkey Kong, which is a great example of just how overstuffed it was.

Tried to be to much. And then all the things got muddled by forcing Kong changes sometimes very far from where you want to switch at. It had its moments, but was definitely not the top shelf of N64 games.

I want to like this game because it has a lot of personality and I love the DK series, but this is just dreadful. There is rarely any platforming, most of the gameplay consists of playing some sort of mini-game (quality is mixed) or using some gimmick (at times it's very clunky) to get the collectibles. Even then the platforming feels overly heavy, and everyone moves as if they're running in slow motion. It would still be bad if it focused on platforming given how bad the mechanics for that are.

This game gets a silly amount of disrespect. Compared to 3D collectathons at the time, this was so much bigger and more varied and intricate than anything else. With several expansive worlds and a fairly easy way to switch between characters, there is a lot to collect, but it's fun... so why is that a bad thing?

Donkey Kong did not entertain as much as the Mario franchise, and I hated the side characters.

The type of game that couldn't possibly be fun for more than 15 minutes at a time.

How do you expect me to play a game after you've got me rockin' out this hard?

Why oh why oh why are these worlds so exhaustingly, obtusely, infuriatingly giant and overstuffed with collect-a-thon nonsense? Bigger worlds are not by default better. Watching the world size blow up from Mario 64 to Banjo-Kazooie to Banjo-Tooie to this game is about as much fun as watching your wife gain 300 lbs. You're like, NO! STOP EXPANDING!

Ok game. They changed this to a 3D scroll er. At the time this was the first game I have played using the expansion pak. This game requires the expansion pak. So if you do buy this game now and you don't have a an expansion pak..... Then don't buy it. Don't like the huge 3D World with Donkey.

It's just a boring mess with an awesome theme song. It isn't nearly good enough as a platformer and the collection elements are not nearly as good as others like Banjo. The overworld designs are pretty bland and uninteresting as well.

Still in the height of Rare's notoriety, DK64 delivered a charming adventure collectathon that captured our hearts. The Kong-switching mechanic was top-notch, in that all of the Kongs played differently enough to make them interesting. The game tended to drag a bit, and there was too much to collect. But hey, the DK Rap.

DK 64 is by far not the best RARE has to offer in their library. It is however, still a fun 3D platforming adventure. With some real challenges and it still contains that trademark RAREWare humor all throughout.
