Undertale
2015
Adventure, Horror
A small child falls into the Underground, where monsters have long been banished by humans and are hunting every human that they find. The player controls the child as they try to make it back to the Surface through hostile environments, all the while engaging with a turn-based combat system with puzzle-solving and bullet hell elements, as well as other unconventional game mechanics.

Perhaps its reputation coloured my expectations too much, but I found this a decent-enough experience with some interesting mixtures between innovation and derivation without setting my world on fire.

I don't get it! I played for maybe a couple hours, but found it too boring to bother figuring out how to get past Muffet. I found the humour hit and miss. I feel a bit better to have wasted money on this.

A pretty lighthearted game filled with choices. One of the more replayable games out there. Simplistic for some but absolutely nostalgic for many of us who grew up with EarthBound and other RPGs like it.

The game's attempts at humor are outright insufferable in a way that makes characterization cringworthy and I didn't care much for its juvenile attitude towards violence and pacifism. On the other hand, the game is clever with using its gameplay for meta manipulation and the way battles are used to convey personality is charming while offering a lot of variety to its gameplay. The visuals are also mesmerizing, especially being one of the few 2D games that use lighting to great effect.

A work of ethics that changed the course of video game stories, but also a delightful story with tons of great characters, but also a challenge that works even for a casual gamer like me, but also a strong piece of metafiction, but also a fantastic adventure that incorporates so many of the things I wanted in a game as a kid, but couldn't express. Plus the soundtrack is fantastic. Oh, and the aesthetic of the final battle - well, anyway. Anyone who cares about video games should play Undertale.

Loses points due to being really short, but the soundtrack is baller, the premise is novel and the gameplay is pretty gud.

Typical RPG BS. Lots and lots of boring story and negligible gameplay. Those few gameplay bits are just arcade style avoid-the-bullet games, despite that, they're still the best part of the game, but they are still unreasonably difficult considering it's interactive fiction where you're supposed to be just following the story. Then, when you do die, you have to sit through a tedious cut scene and re-do the initial parts of the fight again. Horrible design.

I don't know that I'll ever be part of its hardcore cult but I did find it an interesting, enjoyable and occasionally even emotional experience, if one pretty short and shallow on the gameplay front. The mix of "bullet hell" gameplay with otherwise traditional RPG battles is a very clever twist, and make some of the boss battles quite exciting. Some solid puzzles, but the phone calls in the second half of the game became annoying. I'll go back and try Pacifist/Genocide runs one day.

It's a cute little RPG. It's not earth shattering but it's entertaining for a while.

Really cool take on the RPG, offering a bullet hell experience, a weird but endearing story and a good soundtrack. I do love the game but I'm not in that level of fandom that you see around.
