Red Dead Redemption ... is the second title in the Red Dead franchise, after 2004's Red Dead Revolver. The game, set during the decline of the American Frontier in the year 1911, follows John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a hired gun. Having no other choice, Marston sets out to bring the three members of his former gang to justice. (wikipedia.org)

GTA meets Unforgiven. There is no denying the quality of this Rockstar effort, but I disliked the amount of long dull horse rides from location to location between missions. At least in GTA you can stick on the radio and drive recklessly. Marston is a likeable protagonist though and the core gameplay is as solid as you would expect from Rockstar.

Only playing it now it's been ported over, as I was over the GTA formula at the time. It shows its age, but there's a lot to love, even with only a passing interest in Westerns. John Marston is a very well written and performed character. Worth playing just to get familiar with him alone. Yes, the game is empty, but it should be-the setting is open. And you always have hunting and random events along the way.

The GTA formula that's always liable to be entertaining successfully transposed to an alternate setting. While it's fitting thematically, the game world can feel a little lonely at times, and it doesn't offer the sheer glut of activities and interactions the sequel does. Goes without saying with Rockstar, but the script and voice acting are of course top notch.

back then it was one of the best games ever but somehow i know how outdated it's gotten without even playing it since 2014 maybe. loved the story and marston, but i hated having to be his son at the end. otherwise i woulda kept playing and finished side quests lol. loved dead eye. shooting up the place and hiding on the saloon balcony could be fun. loved liar's dice and the knife finger game. at times the world seemed too barren i think

Red Dead Redemption is one of the few open world games that makes real use of the concept. The story is powerful, the graphics are gorgeous and there are a million things to do on the side. Other games have tried, but none have been a true simulation of the old West until this one.

AKA Grand Theft Horse. It turns out the mass lawlessness and violence of GTA works so much better within the mythology of the Old West. Not to mention the open world is beautiful, and the main character is complex by video game standards. Still has the problem that the GTA games had of having a difficult to follow over-arching narrative though.

I wish I could tell you how much I spent my lifetime on this game. From the campaign to the bonus objectives to hunting achievements to online skirmishes to just riding around exploring and causing havoc. Countless hours. Days. It's an impeccable depiction of the genre and world. I even rode around collecting specific types of flowers just to max out my stats. Few games push me to do mundane tasks like that.

Grand Theft Auto in the Old West! A great concept, but I lost interest real quick once I realized that parts of the map were barred to me in my pursuit of hunting. I'm a cowboy on a horse, and neither of us can swim? Meh. It was good the first time I picked it up, but I have no interest in ever revisiting. Still, it was pretty freakin' amazing while it lasted.
