When you take a step back and examine it, Heavy Rain is pretty laughable in a lot of ways but it does a lot right and I really do enjoy the novel concept of movie-games. I think the problem is that David Cage would make a terrible filmmaker.

there are a few genuinely inspired segments in this game. the problem with the rest is that the person being inspired is David Cage

"David Cage's best game" sounds like an insult still.

David Cage is a hack and his idea of storytelling is the most pretentious shit imaginable. The most fun I get out of this game is seeing montages of failed QTE's.

Some pacing issues, and some things Ethan goes through just feel torturous for no real entertainment to the player. There are some great moments and glitches around Ethan shouting for his kids. As a mystery, it's all right, but not as great a twist as the game would have you believe.

Visually impressive. Story is ass garbage and David Cage is a creepy, rapey fuck. Has no real gameplay to speak of.

Excellent game. As you control 4 characters in this to find out who the murder is. One of the best game on the PS3. I just love the game play in this as it's a very story driven game and the story gets you hooked a lot in this because it's well done.

Another game I'm not sure how to rate. There are a couple moments in this game that are among my favorite moments in all of gaming. There are moments of sheer stupidity that make me question the sanity of David Cage. This formula under the guiding hand of someone more competent could be one of the best video game stories ever told.

I waited for an attempted suicide to bleed out in the bathtub for 2 hours. Nothing happened. This game's got choices that MATTER.

I'll preface by saying this: Heavy Rain is an interesting experience, marred by an ideology that seems to undermine itself. It was marketed as a murder-mystery in which every main character can die, changing the outcome of the story for that playthrough, which sounds intriguing. However what this boiled down to was playing through the game once to get the best ending, then googling the other endings because playing it again was a quick time event-filled chore.

Liked it a lot as a teen, but I wouldn't expect it to hold up well in this day and age. YMMV but I think there is entertainment enough in this title to warrant a recommendation.

A compelling story combined with deep characters made Heavy Rain almost more of a movie than a game. Gameplay elements in general were purposely sparse, giving the game a more "cinematic" feel. Long, dragging sections and lack of actual gameplay make it hard to love this game, but it's definitely worth experiencing.
