Microsoft Minesweeper
1990
Puzzle
The goal of the game is to uncover all the squares that do not contain mines without clicking on a square with a mine underneath. The location of the mines is discovered by a process of logic. Some squares contain numbers (1-8), each being the number of mines adjacent to the uncovered square. To help avoid hitting a mine, the location of a suspected mine can be marked by flagging it. The game is won once all blank squares have been uncovered without hitting a mine. (wikipedia.org)

I've spent probably as much hours playing this game as it would have taken me to write three full-length novels. I'll admit, the first four years, I had no idea what I was supposed to do in the game. But once I realized, well, let's just say that there's no device in my possession that doesn't have Minesweeper installed on it!

If you have nothing better to do like staring into a wall, then why not.

This game really blew up and swept the nation when it was released, because it's the bomb. Call me a square, but it's one of mine favorite computer games, and it makes me very smiley face to play it all the timer.

those little 2x2 blocks with the two possible sets of two diagonal bombs. you know the ones. fuck those. I don't play puzzles to guess!! (I played a lot of these puzzles anyway)

I have only beaten the hard level ONCE, but I did beat it. Bill Gates once said that his biggest mistake in his entire career was Minesweeper because he personally lost more productivity due to the game. It's logical. It's methodical. It's addictive. And it has a friendly smiley face.

It's a puzzle game that involves luck, I'm going to pass

In 1998, when you at home bored alone and going on the internet was a chore because dial-up took 30 seconds just to load the google homepage, this is what you payed to abnegate your time. And that's it's sole reason for existence, and for time it did an okay job of doing that. But in 2018, with smartphones, and millions of games far better than this to occupy this at your fingertips, you have to ask, what's the point of Minesweeper?

It was never for me, even when I finally learned what the fuck I was actually supposed to do.

As someone who likes to act elitist over gaming skillz, it's odd of me to say that I never understood how anyone could be good at this game. Seriously, how the fuck does this game work?
23 Feb 2018
Ok fun. You get bored very fast, though.

Jeez, how many hours did I and millions of other people sink into this on our work pcs when we should have been working? I'm not sure I ever played it outside of work despite plenty of opportunity. This score reflects my 'at work' experience!

Do people really not know how to play minesweeper??

I love Minesweeper. Fuck you, brickwall. I have spent hours and hours playing this game, and if we based a game on how much we played it, this would be one of my top games. I had the fastest times in my state back a decade or so ago. A great time waster, which is kinda the point.

I'll sum up the average person's reaction to this game: mad cause bad. The only problem is that it can come down to a random guess, especially on expert where it can come down to 5 or 6. Other than that, the problem solving and pattern recognition of a 10 year old should be enough if you have any patience beyond literally none. At one point I got my times to consistently under 8, 35, and 110 for beginner, advanced, and expert respectively. I'm a dork.

No one knows how to play this game. If you say you do, you're a liar.
