Especially at the start, this game's atmosphere is superb. I wish I'd played it at the time of release to truly appreciate it.

One of the true classics of gaming. Epic boss battles and music, a real sense of isolation that permeates through everything. Nintendo is the greatest developer in the world even today due to the amount of care they put into their craft, and Super Metroid is one of the finest examples of that. Also, the final battle with Mother Brain is a triumph in storytelling... it hits an emotional high without saying a word.

on the short list of candidates for the best video game ever made. the amount of incidental nuance in the gameplay set a standard that's still rarely matched, and the emphasis on atmosphere and isolation provide a template other games have failed to follow. it also manages, somehow, to offer a beautiful statement on motherhood. Gunpei Yokoi was yanked from this world far too soon, but in his time with us, he gave the us the greatest work of art that necessitates a controller.

Great atmosphere and music. Excalidraw + quick snip = map notes is superb combo. There's something special that's pretty satisfying about the gameplay. For some reason, I don't mind circling and wasting time on this game. But still hate the one way street. I don't like the lack of ammo station. Hate grappling, spike & plants, and sand section. Way too many hidden blocks and paths, and missing important ones makes you hard stuck. Guide. Love the wall jumping in this game.

I don't think it's the "greatest game ever made" but it very likely was at the time of its release; easily the best 16-bit game I've played so far. Great atmosphere, aesthetic and environmental storytelling. Combat was generally not too difficult, but there were definitely a few too many frustrating "Where the heck do I go now?" moments, and the ending felt anti-climactic.

Movement and gameplay feels fun and challenging, especially the wall jump mechanics. Atmosphere and sense of exploration is also good.

Most of this game is really fun, but Meridia ruins it for me. It's not extremely difficult, but difficult enough to turn the final part of the game into a tedious chore.

Super Metroid's strengths lie in how good its routing and room/world design which allows for a lot of cool optimization. I'm not particularly fond of its bosses or enemy design and the game can be overly easy once you get a few E-Tanks to just tank through any encounter. Movement in the game is pretty tight for navigational purposes but the combat in this game is pretty barebones and crappy. It's definitely one of the top games in the genre, but I feel it's better on a speed run than casual.

A great game, but I wish the map had a few more convenience features (like distinguishing picked up items from those that were merely seen, showing exits, showing unopened doors,... ). Apparently it's also possible to softlock yourself at the final save point, which is bad game design. And pushing two buttons with the same finger (or doing a claw grip) for maneuvers like charge-and-jump still feels weird to me. Maybe it'll feel more natural with practice.

This is the best Super Nintendo game that there is hands down. If you look at what a lot of 2D indie games are doing right now, they take a lot of inspiration from this game right here. Even after over 25 years, the graphics still hold up and the gameplay is still on point. There is a reason that outside the "Save the Animals" meme, this is one of the most popular speedruns in gaming.

Nice game, but I sucked and never found my way through it.

The fantastically well-realized game that looms large as the great influential example of just how much life an exploratory structure and some RPG elements can breath into the platforming genre when done right. It so perfectly exemplifies that loop where what begins as a strange dangerous maze where you carefully poke past blocked passages becomes a familiar old path you dash down to try out each new ability in succession. Also, arrestingly atmospheric for its day.

Same problems as Metroid Prime. Unclear where to go so you end up wandering around aimlessly forever.

The game that really perfected the 'metroidvania' concept, as half-indicated in the name. Now this is fun exploration, doubling back once you have the tool to get through an area, and what's more, as you encounter bosses and the like, you have story to spur you to continue. Very well done.

Honestly this game is overrated. In the context that it came out, as the first metroidvania, this game is amazing and the fact that it still holds up as a good game today is incredible. BUT, if it were to come out today for the first time, it wouldn't be considered that great, just a pretty good entry in the genre. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is better imo.

If you were to put a gun to my head and tell me to pick an absolute number one favorite video game of all time I'd probably have to go Super Metroid. From its dark, eerie moody aesthetics and gorgeous music to the way you can control Samus' every move like an extension of your own will once you understand the control to its utterly brilliant interconnected world to its boss battles and simply told but moving story. I've probably played it start to end credits fifty times.

Probably the most perfect game ever made. Beautiful art, evocative music and sound design, phenomenal design theory, and a fantastic setting all flow together seamlessly to create something that is somehow still more than the sum of its parts.
