an even worse than usual james cameron movie clumsily grafted onto a terrible cover shooter. you know, i can sort of understand why people might be into something like morrowind, even if i'm not. it's janky as all hell, but as a result has its own janky as all hell personality. i find it difficult to understand, however, why someone would be moved by this hollow husk of a game, this lifeless corporate product without meaning or consequence. genuinely worthless.

I honestly don't get the appeal of this game - your choices rarely mattered and the combat was the most basic cover shooter shit imaginable. It has a cool setting, but instead of capitalizing on that it forces some really lame "save the universe" plotline that's way overdone and uninteresting. Exploring random planets is boring given how empty they feel, and none of the party characters connected to me aside from Garrus. Easily one of the most overrated games of all time.

A clunky but ambitious space opera—the RPG depth and lore dazzle, yet the Mako missions and gunplay aged like milk.

gameplay is not as smooth as later games but the story is still fantastic

Mass Effect confronts us with freedom disguised as choice: dialogue trees, alliances, the shaping of a galaxy. Yet each path affirms Sartre’s truth—we are condemned to decide, and in deciding, reveal ourselves. Its vastness is not escape but responsibility: the weight of one’s actions echoes across stars, binding the player to meaning.

What a great start to the series - I was enamored with Mass Effect when I first played it years ago, and recently played through it again with the Legendary Edition. There is definitely some jank to the gameplay that was cleaned up in future entries, but this was just outstanding sci-fi and got me into the genre. The level of player choice, true impact, and replayability is awesome.

I played this game towards the end of 2023, and though the graphics are passable, it sadly hasn't aged well. The game showcases a magnificent world with diverse races and a rich history, but the gameplay disappoints. It primarily revolves around running and shooting, occasionally under time constraints. The locations feel barren, and navigating the game space is unintuitive, often leading to a random search for mission objectives.

As someone who bounced off of the gameplay side of the original version of this a couple of times, the Legendary Edition's quality-of-life improvements were enough to get me over that hump and finally experience this compelling story and world properly. There's still plenty that doesn't work for me, like how obviously fake a lot of dialogue "choices" are and how unacceptably bad the Mako handles. Excited to dive into the second one.

I really enjoyed this game. I think it takes a while to sort of start understanding the lore and the characters, but once you do, there's a great story here. Some of the side mission worlds are unfortunately pretty dull though, with Mako exploration being extremely frustrating. The main missions though are fantastic, and I loved the way everything came together in the end. Can't wait to check out the second game!

The gameplay direction is awful, the sidequests are copy-paste prefab shit, the weapon balancing suffers from neglect, and the combat AI is lacking. And I got roped into a romance that made me retch. Hopefully the rest of the trilogy doesn't disappoint me as much.

Needs some polishing, especially with the damned land vehicles, but an okay game that world-builds a space conflict and introduces some neat alien races.

Ebbs and flows between tedious and interesting often. I don't think I ever LOVED it. It always felt like a step back compared to the janky near-greatness of Jade Empire.

Loved playing as Commander Shepard, really cool world. Great game, one of my favourites of all time.

One of the all-time greats, but is held back by how ridiculously clunky the actual gameplay is. This would be fixed in the sequel. It's a shame we never got a third or fourth game. Also, shoutout to Tali's hips.

Trash. Story line was ok. Again couldn't get into this game

would probably be lower cuz outdated. this was a 100 when it came out though. i think those were my first dialogue wheels. the best choices/goodorbad game i'd played. space exploration was amazing and reading about every planet/system. now i know those planets are just barren lmao. i love the lore. one of my fondest game phase memories was listening to the codex audio while getting ready for bed. i love the story and liara makes you love her

A brilliant science fiction experience whose stellar writing propels this out of video game writing and into good story-telling, regardless of medium. It is not without its problems which stem mostly from a very rushed development cycle. Honestly though, the strengths of this game far outweigh the setbacks.

Weak shooter mechanics but I enjoyed the harder sci-fi that the first game in the series promised. The universe felt interesting and the series villains hadn't been written into absurdity yet.
11 Jul 2018
Weak combat, copy-pasted side quests, all the worst aspects of RPGs (a million copies of the shittiest items to clutter your inventory), and pretty weak graphics. That said, this has the largest dialogue tree in the series, so if you want to be a hero, you can be, and if you want to be a prick, you can do that too.

Excellent gameplay, excellent story, a lot of memorable characters. A really crazy plot twist toward the end of the game. There isn't a whole lot of replay value, but you can get through at least two playthroughs without getting bored. And those games are going to be fantastic.

I played this game fairly recently after having it sit on my hard drive for a long time and I have to say, it's still pretty fun. It was a much better experience for me on PC than on Xbox 360, and I really dug the gameplay once I got used to it. Also, you can go the entire game without getting busy with anyone. I never cared about doing that.

It's story takes a long time to get off the ground, and its gameplay gets monotonous quickly, but it stands up decently on its own and does a great job of setting the story, universe and characters for the excellent sequels.

Wrex your big scaly ass is mine

Unlike the others t his is RPG first and shooter second, and yes, it does tell in the gameplay, which isn't awful but not real mechanically sound. However, it builds up the villains wonderfully, the story is great, there's a lot more customization to your team than in the next games. The other MEs differ from this in important ways (good and bad) so it comes down to what you want from the series: I still think this is the best one by a little bit.
