Resident Evil 4 marks a new chapter in the Resident Evil series. You'll rejoin Leon S. Kennedy six years after his first mission as a rookie cop from Resident Evil 2. Now a US agent, Leon is on a top secret mission to investigate the disappearance of the president's daughter. As Leon, you must make your way to a mysterious location in Europe, where new enemies await. Take them down by using enhanced aim-and-shoot features and a new action button.

Far and away the best entry into the Resident Evil franchise, and possibly my favorite game of all time. It's hard to find any fault with Resident Evil 4. Tons of replay value, interesting and varied environments, terrifying enemies, excellent shooting mechanics and weapon varieties, the list goes on. There's a reason I've bought the game multiple times on multiple platforms.

Hot Take: RE4 is possibly the most over-rated game of all-time. It attempts to be a survival horror, a B-movie action film and a campy comedy all at the same time, and it does an okay job of all three, but excels at nothing. It's also about twice as long as it needs to be, with certain story beats and set pieces feeling like redundant and monotonous repetitions of what's come before.

Capcom’s genre-redefining masterpiece blends white-knuckle action with spine-chilling horror. Leon’s suplexes, the ”What are you buying?” merchant, and the Regeneradors’ gurgling nightmares are perfection. The pacing? Flawless. The village siege, Salazar’s clocktower, Krauser’s knife fight—every set piece is iconic.

Iconic. RE4 is what many consider to be the best RE game of all time, and one of the best of the 2000’s. This perfectly blended both the early/slower games with the later/action heavy games this franchise has spawned. It seemingly took a step back and plays into its goofy absurdities a bit, while opting for a more creepy than scary atmosphere. This is probably the best the stories have ever been, and featuring iconic and fun bosses made this what it is. You can’t really go wrong here.

The poster child for Survival Horror breaks the well-established mold to forge a more action-packed direction with scale, style, and set-pieces aplenty. Some control peculiarities aside (like the insistence on the old stand-in-place attack handling), it's a polished and influential model for where the third person shooter was headed, popularizing the soon-to-be-ubiquitous over-the-shoulder view. The plot's cheesy, and the core combat repeats, though I wouldn't have expected otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, i think this game is amazing! But! Is it a great resident evil game? The constrictions in gameplay were what made this franchise work. You were a badass soldier, but you moved and aimed like an idiot and you never knew what lurked around the next corner, often even after you took it. That created dread and helplessness. It was scary. Now you can shoot limbs and heads, look and move around freely. You're basically fuckin' rambo. Is that scary?

I should have played this when it came out. I wanted to like this because I wanted a good horror/action hybrid (cuz I'm a wimp and I get spooked easy but YEAH ACTION!). But the controls... the fucking controls. I couldn't do it. Maybe the rest of the game is fantastic but I checked out quick because of them. Dogshit that hasn't aged well at all. From what I've heard, maybe I should have found the Wii version, which apparently has good controls?

Pros: Map system, The Merchant in this game where you can buy different guns and have them upgraded, The case to hold your items, Key items are now in a separate category and you don't need ink ribbons to save the game. Cons: The Over the Shoulder camera angle, and aiming in this game is awful. Protecting Ashley in this game, Puzzles, Game is too long, The different types of Enemies like the ones with the Claws or the Chain Saw guys. Conclusion: Just play this game once.

It takes the Resident Evil formula to an entirely different level, going from the standard horror tropes to a campy medieval setting to a military compound. It has it all. Add in some solid gameplay mechanics and one particularly great shopkeeper and you have a different direction for Resident Evil but one that still works wonders.

RE4 is a massive shark jump for the RE series but one that's quite good. The game has good variety in setpieces with enemies that constantly keep you on your toes and work well together in pressuring you in smart ways. Weapon variety is also balanced which makes customization and resource management into meaningful decision making. On the other hand, the set pieces and enemy encounters get substantially weaker in the later portions but its salvaged by solid boss design and cool art direction.

The game is oddly perfect on the Wii. I had so much fun with it and I think the fact that it has a much different gameplay approach aided the game so much from how dated survival horror was starting to get. It's such a wonderful game that I don't even mind the Ashley levels (though it gets docked points for the Ashley levels!).

I have to wonder if this game contributed to a larger shift away from survival horror to action games with horror themes, in the way that it certainly changed its own series at the least. Despite my dissatisfaction with that overall change in video games, I can\'t hold it against a game that was this enjoyable.
