Tetris (In Russian: ??????) is a puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov's favorite sport. (TheGamesDB)

Tetras is Russian. Russian's were communists. Communism was critiqued by George Orwell's landmark novel 1984. Tetras was made in 1984. Coincudence? I think not! *cue X-Files music*

A timeless classic! Extremely simple, but anyone who masters this game deserves all the props in the world. This is a game people will be playing for decades in the future, and then some.

Every game turns into a more and more desperate wait for that long vertical shape to turn up.

This game is so simple but so addicting. I think it taps into some lizard-part of your brain that likes to see things clean and orderly.

Well, it's tetris. Played a lot of it when it was the only fun game on my Apple II.

Is tetris the greatest video game of all time? It's certainly in the conversation. The first ever time I played a game that sounded incredibly dull yet proved to be fun and amazingly addictive. Very simple to pick up and play, but like the true classics it's very difficult to master. I still enjoy a quick game of tetris every now and then. It's simply one of the all-timers that everyone should play at least once.

I got so good at this in my high school journalism class because my teacher was retiring and didn't want to do any work.

This is the simple puzzle video game that launched the handheld video game craze. It may not be as relevant today as it once was, but few games can suck you in for hours. Another Benchmark to judge all other puzzle video games against.

Diverting in bursts. I do feel a bit sorry for Alexey Pajitnov for all the times he's tried to recapture the lightning with something like Hatris or "Faces... 'tris 3".

A classic time-waster. I wonder how popular it would've been as an MMO.

A complete classic. Fond memories of it are deeply entrenched in my childhood and also in adolescence when a friend would play the theme on piano accordian... oh and also from a few weeks ago when I was watching Tetris speedruns. Timeless.

Is Tetris fun? Of course, but no matter how you slice it, it's blocks falling. No narrative, just a basic mental puzzle. So some people love and adore it. I find value in it, but I can't rate it super high because it's simple.

Long car trips meant Gameboy and Tetris when I was a kid. A game that even my adult relatives were excited to play. I was never more than mildly interested in this time waster, but the music sure is catchy as hell.

Not much I can say about this game that hasn't already been said so I'll say one thing you probably don't know: the very original Famicom version of this game, not the one Nintendo did but the Bulletproof Software original, is terrible. But I have the original Game Boy version, which is really the definitive version for most people, and that one is untouchable.
